Jobs and Internships
OnEarth currrently has no full-time positions available.
OnEarth seeks graduate-level journalism students who can help us tell fascinating and important stories about environmental health, science, and policy. OnEarth publishes a monthly digital magazine (our debut issue launches this fall), and also publishes daily and weekly content, from news stories and essays to reviews and columns. We generally accept two interns each term.
Our staff is small, so interns work closely with the editors in our New York offices and are invited to sit in on story and art meetings and article critiques with senior staff. We're an online MAGAZINE (that's our DNA), so we're looking for interns who will fit in and thrive at a publication that focuses on robust narratives, strong voices, smart curation, and insightful commentary.
Intern responsibilities include providing initial research and reporting for feature stories and infographics; pitching and writing news stories, columns, and personal essays; producing content; writing headlines and display copy; sourcing photos; promoting content via social media; and contributing to our daily news roundup. Interns may also help fact-check and proofread stories. Our requirements include: excellent writing skills, a strong interest in science and environmental topics, headline-crafting prowess, social media mastery, and a sense of humor.
Hours are generally 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. two or three days a week (we're flexible). The pay is $15 per hour. OnEarth is published by the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council, but all of your work will be journalistic in nature; you will not be involved in fundraising, advocacy, media relations, or the like. We're seeking excellent journalists, not advocates (although we encourage strong points of view when appropriate).
To apply, e-mail your resume and 3-5 clips spotlighting your strongest writing and magazine-style voice to firstname.lastname@example.org with "Internship" in the subject line.
