World MakerFaire is an annual festival celebrating fresh, do-it-yourself thinking in science, technology, and crafts. This year, several MakerFaires were held around the country, including one September 25-26 at the New York Hall of Science. The greener side of MakerFaire includes concept art as well as practical takes on reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Many of the fest's exhibitors (or "makers," in MakerFaire lingo) have invented thought-provoking ways to reuse consumer goods and leftovers from manufacturing that would otherwise end up in landfills. There's also a strong current of self-sufficiency, experimentation, and smart city living embodied in the maker ethos, lightened up with a bit of tongue-in-cheek survivalism.
