I'd like to know what the definition of 'historical population levels' for cod is, because historical accounts I've read have been ridiculously bountiful, and even just 30% of those would be a significant population. Are we talking about pre-Columbus levels? Pre-Basque levels? Because by all truly historical accounts I've read, codfish were so plentiful that you hardly needed to fish for them; you could drop a basket in the water for a short period (weighted down by a stone), and upon raising it from the water come out with enough to feed a large household. I seriously doubt we're a third of the way back to those levels--as much as I'd love to hear that news.
